After spending years as an entrepreneur, I’ve heard many leaders rave about building “the dream team”. But what is this dream team?
In simple words, it’s a team that sticks together and performs well not just during the good days, but also under pressure. It’s a team where everyone is aligned towards the same goal, and puts in an equal amount of effort to achieve it.
Anyway, without any further ado, let's discuss what it takes to build such a stellar team that outperforms all others. Although it requires time, patience and some mindful decisions, here is my take on how to build a team.
Building a strong team isn’t an overnight process. It takes years of experience, dedication, patience, and team-building activities to reach the dream team goal. Sometimes, you’re already working with a winning team - all you need to do is align them on a mutual goal.
Some leaders think success is all about hiring geniuses. The truth is, when you put the wrong people together, no amount of talent can save the chaos. I’ve seen such disasters unfold faster than a Wi-Fi outage during a Zoom call. People who don’t understand each other’s strengths or don’t communicate effectively can turn the most promising project into a nightmare.
When developing a team, shortlist candidates with complementary skills. Try to put personalities over degrees and accolades. Look for people who can adapt, communicate, and solve problems together, not independently. It’s the secret to building a team that outperforms.
Ever been in a group project where no one knew what they were supposed to do? Yeah, don’t let that be your workplace. When ambiguity during work creeps in, it can lead to confusion, conflicts and inevitably, inefficiency in work.
For this, I personally love the RACI matrix. The RACI matrix was proposed by Edmond F. Sheehan in the 1950s. It maps out who is RESPONSIBLE for a certain task and who has the final say or ACCOUNTABILITY. It also shows who needs to be CONSULTED in case of emergencies and who needs to be INFORMED about updates on the project. This matrix is very useful for developing successful teams that deliver outstanding results.
Following the RACI matrix helps you shortlist candidates easily by aligning a person's skills and personality with their role in the group. It works like a GPS where everyone knows who to turn to at every aspect of the project.
Feedback is synonymous with building a strong team and should always be welcomed. It helps you learn and grow, both as a mentor and as a human. If you’re someone who takes pride in the fact that your team never complains, I've got some bad news for you. A quiet team isn’t necessarily a happy team. If no one’s speaking up, it’s either because they don’t care or they’re too afraid to.
Encouraging discussions, taking suggestions seriously, and actively listening can help you build a team that feels valued. When people feel heard, they invest more in their work (and won’t be secretly updating their LinkedIn bio during lunch breaks). Oh, and if someone does complain about the team, try not to take it as an offense.
Micromanaging surely makes you feel like you’re in control, but it’s just doing the opposite. Constantly hovering over your team can hinder their productivity and creativity. Trust your team to do their job, and give them the space to shine. Micromanagement can lead to burnout, decreased morale, and stifled innovation.
Instead, focus on clear communication, set expectations, and empower your team to take ownership of their work. By stepping back, you’ll allow them to grow, make decisions, and contribute more effectively, ultimately building a strong team.
Some leaders think the key to success is grinding away at work 24/7. It’s not. Even the most passionate workers can turn into lifeless zombies due to exhaustion and burnout, and that helps no one. What truly drives productivity is working smarter, not harder.
Focus on the efficiency of the work done, not the hours spent doing it. Allow your team to take shortcuts that make work easier for them. Also, encourage your team to take adequate breaks instead of just relying on stress and coffee. A well-rested team is a winning team.
Want to know what makes great employees quit? Feeling stuck. When your team sees zero room for growth, they’ll leave quicker than a declining stock on Wall Street.
To keep your top talent, invest in their personal growth. Offer mentorship, training, and actual chances to level up. A winning team isn’t just great today—it’s constantly evolving and getting even better.
Building a team is not about hiring superheroes or managing your company like a military camp. It's about establishing an atmosphere where individuals can be productive, feel appreciated, and like coming to work.
